Publishing Trap Board Game

The Publishing Trap is a board game from the UK Copyright Literacy team that allows participants to explore the impact of scholarly communications choices and discuss the role of open access in research by following the lives of four researchers from doctoral research to their academic legacies. I was tasked with establishing a brand identity and developing the idea from a prototype into a scaleable, transportable, user-friendly board game. Below are various game elements including cards, the playbook, and the foldable board. The Publishing Trap logo needed to represent the “game” element, with the “trap” aspect reminiscent of games like Mouse Trap. The owl, a symbol of wise academia, in the one caught in the cage. The game has now been played in universities worldwide, and is being translated into other languages. A revised and updated version is currently in development!
